The former Kikyoya family is an old family home that ran a tea and paper wholesale business in Fujisawa-shuku on the old Tokaido road. Three buildings, including the only storehouse still standing in the city and a library storehouse from the end of the Edo period, are registered as national tangible cultural properties and convey the atmosphere of the old post town. In order to preserve the history and culture of Fujisawa-juku and to generate vitality and excitement in the area, we acquired the former Kikyoya in October 2020. We aim to preserve this symbolic building facing the old Tokaido road and to find an appealing way to use it. In conjunction with the Civic Festival, there will be a special tour of the former Kikyo Hall and a Kamishibai (paper theater) performance. We look forward to seeing you all there!

This facility provides a place to experience the history and culture of the former Fujisawa-shuku post station on the Tokaido road, and aims to promote interaction between local residents and visitors to the area, thereby contributing to the promotion of culture among the citizens and helping to revitalize and enliven the former Fujisawa-shuku post station and the surrounding area. On the day of the Civic Festival, we will be holding a "Bengara Dyeing Experience." The dye is made from iron oxide extracted from the soil, and its gentle colors are its speciality.

There is a bronze statue of Ippen Shonin, the founder of the Ji sect, on a hill to the right of the main hall. During the war, it was removed in order to donate iron materials, but on May 23, 1970, a bronze statue of the founder of the sect, made by Reiun Hayashi, was donated by Sendai Amida-ji Temple. The base stone was also donated by the parishioners of Kawagoe Jokoku-ji Temple, and the rocks in the artificial hill and garden were also donated by other believers. Ippen Shonin (1239-1289) was a Japanese monk from the Kamakura period and the founder of the Ji sect. He preached that anyone can be saved by chanting the Nembutsu, and is known for his "dancing Nembutsu," a practice in which monks chant the Nembutsu while dancing. He spread his teachings among the common people and traveled around, freely carrying out missionary work that did not rely on the strict temple system. His teachings were supported by many common people and developed into the Ji sect.
