Honke Matsugane is a representative merchant house in Iwakuni, built around 1850 (Kaei 3). Located in Kugamachi, where Iwakuni's leading merchants were gathered during the Edo period, the house flourished as Matsukaneya, which manufactured and sold the hair oil Matsukane Oil. Matsukin oil was sold under the trade names "Ume-ga-ka" and "Ran-no-Shizuku," and it is said that when Yoshikawa went to Edo, it was also used as a gift for various feudal lords. When feudal lords and shogunate officials came to see the Kintai Bridge, it was also used as a rest area, and was bustling with samurai and merchants. Shokin oil became known throughout the country as a specialty of Iwakuni. Kagawa Kageki, a poet with ties to Iwakuni, wrote, "The fragrance of plum blossoms wafting from a pillow of pine roots will soon become a decoration of the capital," which shows that it became known all the way to the capital (Kyoto). In the early Showa period, the building came into the possession of the Kuniyasu family, who ran a soy sauce manufacturing business and named their company's soy sauce trademark "Matsugae." This was named after Matsugae oil, which was invented from pine root resin. This shows how famous Matsugae oil was as a brand. Built with the wealth that Matsukanaya had accumulated, the building still retains its magnificent appearance to this day, and in 2000 (Heisei 12) it was registered as a tangible cultural property as the "Kuniyasu Family Residence."
